At Formed Ideas, we specialize in streamlining sales through smart CPQ solutions, but occasionally, technical challenges so intriguing arise that we can't say no. One such challenge came from EcoRail – and it involved GoPro cameras, railways, and smart software.

The Mission: Video Inspection of Railway Tracks with GoPro

EcoRail needed a solution to control multiple GoPro cameras simultaneously from a railway inspection car. The goal? To document and analyze track gauge changes and other load-related rail details.

The requirements were clear:

✅ Control six GoPro Hero Black 13 cameras simultaneously
✅ Film railway tracks synchronously from different angles
✅ Build a scalable and wireless solution

The Solution: GoPro Open API in Action

We developed a customized application based on GoPro Open API, allowing us to leverage the powerful features GoPro's development platform offers. By communicating directly with the cameras over the car's own WiFi network, we could:

🔧 Synchronize camera control – start/stop, recording settings, and status monitoring
🔧 Create a scalable structure to manage more than six cameras in the future
🔧 Ensure the entire system runs on existing hardware without external add-ons

🔧 The application is installed on the car's existing LTM computer, which can be accessed remotely via TeamViewer – enabling remote control and monitoring even during ongoing operations.

This project is an excellent demonstration of how GoPro cameras, combined with the GoPro Open API, can create value in entirely new industries – like rail and infrastructure.
