Control multiple GoPro cameras wirelessly with the GoPro Open API – our customized solution

We at Formed Ideas have our expertise in streamlining sales through smart CPQ solutions, but sometimes technical challenges arise that are so exciting we can’t say no. One of these projects came from EcoRail – and it was about GoPro cameras, railways, and smart software.

The Mission: Video Inspection of Railway Tracks with GoPro

EcoRail needed a solution to control multiple GoPro cameras simultaneously from a railway inspection car. The purpose? To document and analyze track gauge changes and other load-related details in the rail.

The needs were clear:

✅ Control six GoPro Hero Black 13 cameras at the same time
✅ Film railway tracks synchronized from different angles
✅ Build a solution that is scalable and wireless

The Solution: GoPro Open API in Practice

We built a custom application based on the GoPro Open API, where we could leverage the powerful features that GoPro's development platform offers. By communicating directly with the cameras over the car's own WiFi network, we were able to:

🔧 Synchronize camera control – start/stop, recording settings, and status monitoring
🔧 Create a scalable structure to manage more than six cameras in the future
🔧 Ensure that the entire system operates on the existing hardware, without external additions

🔧 The application is installed on the car's existing LTM computer, which in turn can be accessed remotely via TeamViewer – enabling remote control and monitoring even during ongoing operation.

This project is an excellent example of how GoPro cameras combined with GoPro Open API can create value in entirely new industries – such as rail and infrastructure.
